- This is about the real me. My plans from childhood were to get a good education, start a life long career, and then have family. It would be smooth sailing from there. That was a knave dream because I learned that life was more complicated than that.
I'm a military brat by an interracial couple. Well, what I mean is my dad is black and my mom is white. My parents married at a young age. My dad went into the military and not much longer I came along. I was born in the Philippines. We came back to the States when I was 6 months old. By the time I was school age, my parents divorced and the custody battles began. My first school was in Japan and my new mommy would teach me how to walk to school by myself. That time in my life was the beginning of my independence and habits to nurture other people. I had a younger brother and sister who I clung to, through the days we were left home alone, private meetings with each of my parent's attorneys, and after hours on school days. They were my babies in the mind of a 5 year old.
My elementary days were filled with moving from one new school to another. It felt scary having to learn the ropes at each new school. I didn't know anyone or know where anything was or how to get there. After many court battles, my mother won us over to her. I was ecstatic because I missed her soo much. Life didn't get easier though. There were a lot of tough times ahead. I continued to be the quite girl until one day I saw a girl getting picked on by a crowd of other girls. Something rose up in me. I asked myself, "why are they doing this to her? She's a new girl". Needless to say, I stood up for her and they left her alone. These situations came up time and again until I graduated from high school. (I guess you can say I support the underdog.)
My first paying job at 18 was with the Employment Development Department. There I was trained how to keep "at risk youth" in school. I met youth at schools, special programs, and job fairs to recruit them into our program. They would meet me by appointment and tell me about their life situation. The next step was to guide each individual as to what to do to move forward. I was awarded certificates time and again for having the highest success rate in the region.
Here's the thing. I now was married and had a son. My views about life were changing and I desired to be home with my son. I was making 180 degrees turn from my original goals. I quit my job. At the time all I knew was how to climb the success ladder. Now that I was home, I had learn how to enjoy being in a new atmosphere. My husband and I decided to take a tour of Israel. During our vacation, we decided to have more children.
As we had more children, I tried different homebased businesses. I found that I loved coaching and teaching people. I received an email from a lady. She stated that she had given up doing her business and that she was discouraged BUT when she heard me speaking over the phone she began to cry and know that she could build her business too. That meant a lot to me. I do not think it was so much about what I said but that it was my life situation that spoke volumes. I let everyone know that I had 4 kids and was pregnant at the time when I was working from home.
Now with my 5th child, I do not have the time to do things the way I used to. I'm asked "How do you do it?" and I answer "We all have 24 hours, we just fill them differently." I enjoy my kids, bring in money, and fulfill my passion to inspire others.
